Right out of the box it has been a disappointment. I was kind of excited for a new tech toy to play with and wound up shaking my head at the design decisions Shaw made. There are only 2 ethernet ports. The other two were converted to phone jacks *that are not even enabled.* They also do not allow you to choose customer DNS settings. Which breaks VPNs. Removing DNS settings is anti consumer and anti privacy. If you game you want to be on wired. Wireless is not good enough for serious or competitive gaming. After wasting 6ish hours of my life with one tech leaving on hold for over an hour I have decided to return the BlueCurve Modem. After ordering a gigabit ethernet switch to compensate for the lack of ports. If they could promise to fix the DNS settings option in an update I would have kept it. I'm boggled how they made these decisions that would have cost significant extra cost to implement. 4 ethernet ports and custom DNS is so standard it would cost extra to do anything non standard like remove custom DNS and make 2 of the ports Phone Jacks. If you want a phone jack it comes in addition to the 4 ethernet ports. Who ever at Shaw made those choices needs to be barred from making these kind of decisions in the future. Those 2 choices alone will have anyone tech savvy and knowledgeable about networking upset and return the Gateway. The manager I spoke to that trains people on the new Blue Curve completely agreed with me and said they had a similar reaction when they first saw the ports. Like even the Managers at Shaw realize how counterproductive those choices are. Shaw can not return the 6 hours I lost that they could have prevented by honestly and accurately advertising BlueCurve. If they had told me it only had two ethernet ports and no DNS settings I would have never gone for BlueCurve. If you tell me it is "Future Proof" I expect 4 ethernet ports and DNS settings. A regression is not "Future Proof" by any means or definition. There are also many reports about speed and other issues. Which I never got that far because of the lack of custom DNS settings. Also they don't really tell you the pods are limited to 75 mbps and you won't get full speed on the wifi pods if you have 150, 300, or 600. We all know they took away DNS Settings because if you 1.1.1.1 or Google DNS they can no longer monitor your traffic. I find their choice in this matter offensive, insecure, and unethical. We have the right to use the DNS of our own choosing. It is unethical to force us to use Shaw's DNS service. I did not agree to only use Shaw's DNS when I signed up and they have no reasonable or ethical ground to enforce the use of their DNS. They need to get out of their Ivory Towers and stop being disconnected with the needs and wants of their customers. We need 4 ethernet ports minimum and custom DNS settings. If you want to try BlueCurve you better be ready for only 2 ethernet ports, no DNS settings, and more surprises. The only value in it is the promotion they are offering. If you are a gamer and/or an advanced networker you will not be happy with the BlueCurve Gateway. Also while I'm at it the Hitron is terrible and forgets settings constantly. Choose Technicolor or Cisco. Yes, you can ask for a specific brand or model. If you do go for BlueCurve ask for the Technicolor model and avoid the two Arris models. The Arris models have widespread reports of buggines and poor functionality. The Technicolor model has been reported to work best of the three BlueCurve Gateway models. If you go for Internet 600 Shaw only lets you use BlueCurve even though technically the Cisco Modem can do 600. I had to go back down to the Grandfathered 300 and lose the 600 promo to return the BlueCurve package. Their system is programed to not accept the Cisco at 600 even though it can do it. The instant they give back the ability to choose your DNS Service and not be spied on by Shaw I'll go to BlueCurve again.

Shaw CSRs becoming inept or incompetent across the board?

First I was told by tech support that while they don't officially support VPN for non business customers, I was told the Blue Curve modem has VPN configuration abilities and options within it's web-based admin url - False I swapped my brand new (now 6 month old) Hitron modem which was working fine and tweaked as best it can be given it's limited settings. When I started having issues with the BC modem like VPN throttling and random disconnects (via wifi) I wanted to return to the Hitron. Obviously, I can't get mine back but another one. I was told by tech support they have an ST version in addition to their regular version for the CGNM-2250. That was a lie too apparently. I spoke to another tech support employee from BC who told me I could bridge the CGNM-2250 through the GUI interface (192.168.0.1) - Another lie. I received the replacement Hitron CGNM-2250. While the speeds are nominal when connected via Ethernet, the wifi speeds with 5G and 2.4G are outrageously slow. I used the same config file which I backed up before giving up my modem and used a previous one too. Both config files for the CGNM-2250 showed zero improvement. I even spent about an hour changing the channel settings after doing a factory restore. Nothing improved. The Hitron CGNM-2250 is kind of scarce to find in BC now. I am deeply frustrated and the lack of quality of control is unbelievable. That modem should never be given out to the public. It should be recycled. Anyway, is there any way to ensure I can get Shaw to provide me with a non refurb CGNM-2250?

Link to the article from the front page: https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2020/04/new-cloudflare-tool-can-tell-you-if-your-isp-has-deployed-bgp-fixes/ I tested on Shaw and it of course failed. Thought I would bring some attention to this issue as it can be a significant issue.

Shaw blocking VPN?

We have multiple users on Shaw having trouble connecting to our work VPN, does anyone know if Shaw is still blocking VPNs? I know they used to block VPNs, but last I heard of that a while ago. I tested this with a remote user, had them tether their work device to their phone over LTE and they were able to connect... One other thought, does the Shaw modem limit to one VPN at a time? I don't think this affects this particular user though.

[ALL] Leaving Shaw. Here's what happened.

A few months ago my brother tried to reconnect his shaw internet service at his home. After getting the equipment and connecting to the cable line we discovered that there was no signal. His neighbourhood is old and has telephone poles that carry all the utilities so we were pretty sure that the cable had become disconnected on the pole. This seems to be a compulsion all Shaw techs have which is to disconnect lines when there is no active subscribers. We called Shaw at the beginning of the month and they told us the earliest a tech could come to the house would be 2 weeks away on the 18th. Hows that for great service??? The 18th came and the tech ran up the pole and reconnected the line. Our first bill was for $96 a month for 300Mb service. After a couple of weeks we read about independent ISP's such as Lightspeed offering prices at nearly half of Shaws price. We signed up for $70/ mnth Since then the CRTC has made the decision that wholesale rates are too high and have slashed them. Our new rate is $50/month half price of Shaws price, no contract required. I phoned to cancel the Shaw service and their cancellation department asked why I was leaving and I told them I'm getting same service at half the price so they offered me 1 year of 300mb service at $24.95/month and the next year at $50/month plus a $240 credit of some sort. I suggest everyone take a look at lightspeed.ca and then cancel their Shaw service and see what you can get. You won't lose anything by trying. We know that the incumbents are overcharging for all services and this is a way to bring prices back in line. Too bad we don't have independent cell carriers.

Ping Spikes With Shaw BlueCurve

Just upgraded to Shaw Bluecurve a couple weeks ago and have been getting weird ping spikes most noticeable while gaming basically ever since. I've tried posting on Shaw's forums but wasn't really able to find any help. Just wondering if anyone else has been experiencing anything like this throughout the day with BlueCurve recently? Anytime I've run a ping test to Google or a CSGO custom server for example I've hit maximum MS of 300+ for a second or two sporadically throughout the day.. really irritating. Any troubleshooting tips I could use to help them narrow down what could be causing this would be really appreciated. I'm also wondering if this could just be happening at peak times of the day when the network is under heavy use? It's just weird because it only started happening when I upgraded to BlueCurve. https://imgur.com/HkxBnoZ --- This is a ping test to the game server, Google, and my router. I should also say this happens across any game and isn't with just CSGO.

BlueCurve, Arris and coax splitters: setup questions

$

I'm trying to provide remote help to someone who upgraded to the BlueCurve service from a setup with ancient Shaw boxes. (I'm working from photos, hence some uncertainty.) The new BlueCurve internet is working (340 down; 20 up); next step is sorting out the mess of coax splitters and boosters that are entangled with an Arris TM502 Digital Phone Terminal (?) that is providing 2 phone lines. Basically the coax splits into 3 main branches: phone (Arris box), internet (BlueCurve), and TV coax to rooms. Q1: Should the new BlueCurve box also now provide the phone service? Or do they need to continue to split the coax line into BlueCurve for internet and Arris for phone? Q2: There is a signal booster ( http://www.signalboosterstore.com/Products/MotorolaBDA-K1.htm ) in the coax branching. I notice it is an active return amp. Is this booster likely to cause internet problems? Does its position in all the coax branching matter? Thanks!

[ON] Shaw Satellite TV vs Bell Satellite

Bell tech has said I need to replace my cottage receiver. That's $200 dollars so I decided to look at my options. Shaw seems attractive both because it includes a receiver but also they charge when I shut it down for the winter. Bell charges $10/month to hold the account. Shaw also seems to have more flexibilty in the base package for selecting 5 individual channels. Bell doesn't offer this. Just wondering if anyone else has made the switch from Bell to Shaw and what they found. Thanks

[BC] Prince George to Dawson Creek fibre optic project. Updates ?

Shaw is working to install a new fibre optic cable from Prince George to Dawson Creek. The project was supposed to start in Spring 2020 and be complete by March 2021. I was wondering if anyone knew anything about the progress of this and are willing to give more information. Shaw needs this line badly for network redundancy in northern BC. I've tried tweeting and email some of the people mentioned in the news briefings but to no avail.

[AB] My new Shaw contract

Hi, so my old Shaw contract was due August 19 this year and my bill next month was gonna cost like $240 so I spoke to Shaw chat today and asked if I could renew my contract early and they did it. So now I am paying $216 a month for Total Tv, Giga Internet, and Home Phone with voice mail and that stuff. My old bill was around $205 a month so now I am paying about $10 or bit more bucks a month for more service. Now I get a lot more sports channels as before I never got Sportsnet and all those tennis channels, I still get movie channels and documentary so a few more channels and my news channels, but I dropped Filipino tv bundle as it was $20 dollars by itself and I might order it again when it's cheaper. ABS-CBN in the Philippines was getting dropped anyways. Here is my speed test: https://shaw.speedtestcustom.com/result/bc36f150-c13b-11ea-aaec-17586a9d3ca1 They discounted stuff you can see on my contract so it seems like I am saving but this package I have is the best they offer for now so I guess I am fully loaded with Shaw now. I could order more Tv channels but eh mostly just reruns anyways
