Shaw digital cable

I have bundled TV service with Shaw. I have 2 TVs, one in living room, one in bedroom, only the TV in living room is hooked up to a set-top box. In the past, I had been able to watch basic channels on the bedroom TV, until a few weeks ago when I got a message on the screen to the effect that now the cable is digital and I need to upgrade. BTW, I have no problem with the TV connected to the set-top box at all. My question is: if I buy a new TV with a digital tuner, would I still be able to watch basic channels with out a set-top box? Or does digital cable simply mean that every TV needs a set-top box to watch anything at all? TIA.
