Canadians are using the Internet more and viewing more TV shows and movies on more devices than ever before. As a leading communications provider, we are committed to giving our customers more access to the leading content and technology they want—now and into the future.
Please see answers to common questions below.
Why are my rates going up?
We increase our rates to ensure we are able to continue providing the same exceptional connectivity and content experience while meeting the evolving needs of our customers as programming costs rise and Internet usage continues to grow.
Internet:
Today’s Internet infrastructure in Canada has evolved to meet customer demand and is maintained by companies like Shaw that are dedicated to providing customers access to one of the most advanced broadband networks in the world.
As demand on our network grows exponentially, so must our network capacity. This requires significant investment to keep our network congestion-free so that our customers continue to receive consistent Internet speeds at any time of day.
Canadians now have multiple connected devices both in and outside of their home, and the popularity of Internet of Things and Smart Home devices means more people will be connected on more devices than ever before.
In 1992, global Internet networks carried approximately 100 GB of traffic per day. Ten years later, in 2002, global Internet traffic amounted to 100 Gigabytes per second (GBps). In 2016, global Internet traffic reached more than 20,000 GBps. Source.
TV:
As television content options become more varied—and audiences become more sophisticated and discerning in what they choose to watch—content creators are raising the production budgets on some of their biggest shows to create a more cinematic viewing experience.
To offset the costs of these rising production costs, content producers pass that cost onto content providers like Shaw for the rights to broadcast their content.
For example, producing hit TV shows with elaborate sets, A-list talent and multiple locations—like Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead—can cost between three and eight million dollars per episode.
Similarly, the fees charged by sports leagues—like the NHL, NFL or Premier League Soccer—to televise their games is also increasing as teams build new stadiums, pay players more and enhance the game experience.
These increasing costs are passed onto Shaw from the TV networks and studios.
