[AB] Most reliable Shaw cable internet setup

$

Hi there, I'm thinking of getting the Shaw 60 package, and want to know what's the most reliable setup? Based on research I've done so far, it seems like the DPC 3825 (in bridged mode) is the most reliable setup. Is that still true today for Shaw? I already asked Shaw about nodes. The node in my area seems to not be saturated. Also in terms of usage, I will mainly be using a wired connection directly to the modem, but sometimes will switch to wireless if in another room, and my phone will be hooked up to the wireless. Does using gateway mode dramatically drop reliability vs bridged mode? Also I don't have my own router, so I would prefer not to have to spend extra money to get one, unless I absolutely have to. I have also heard the combo modem/router devices Shaw uses have security issues, as in, Shaw is able to see your personal computer data when the device is on gateway. Is this true at all, or bogus?

August 2016 - Another price hike

From the bill - "Starting August 1, 2016, the price for your Shaw services will be increasing by $6.00, plus taxes. If you are on an introductory offer, this increase will not take effect until your promotional period ends. To find out more, please visit www.shaw.ca/bulletins." I get that prices go up from time to time (it's called inflation) but triple the rate of inflation for no added services/value seems a bit much. Does anyone know if the usage limits will be going up in lockstep with the price hike?

Shaw's "Skinny" Cable Package

$

Just a little over 3 weeks to go before Shaw and the other cable companies are required to introduce so-called "skinny" cable packages that sell for under $25/month. They also must offer either smaller bundles and/or the option to buy channels individually. It's probably not surprising but there has been almost total silence from all providers as to what they'll be offering and for how much. http://www.cbc.ca/news/business/skinny-basic-pick-and-pay-crtc-1.3428776 I wouldn't be surprised if consumers don't see any promotion whatsoever until March 1 and even then it will only be information available on their website and nowhere else. We don't watch much cable TV here but there are a few stations we like to watch and of course they span packages: CBC Newsworld, CTV News Channel, TSN, and TCM. I'm hoping the CRTC's rules mean I can get those channels at a reasonable price which would make giving up even my grandfathered Personal TV + BB100.

Intermittent Packet Loss - Worst at Night and Early Morning

From midnight it gets to be the worst, from 2-4 AM i have complete interruption of service as well. Dont get me wrong, there is no good time but pointing out its worse at night. Is there any reason why someone would experience more packet loss late at night than during the afternoon? Shaw says my line signals are not at optimal levels and will come take a look, but i'm not the only one of my friends with this issue. I also see someone in BC has the problem on here. Any local fixes i can try in the mean time?

Are there any Shaw Promos, for phone, internet and tv for ontario. I only see a 3 month Promo for those Packages in Ontario. At those Prices, i would need the Promo to last for two years. I could not afford that Price. Currently i have Bell Fibreop but they are asking me to switch to a Very Capped Plan and Pay More so i have to look to Shaw again or Find an Internet Cafe i can Push My Wheelchair to! In the Winter.

Shaw speed profiles - BB100/120 upload speeds

I am a grandfathered BB 100 user. For what I get compared to the newer plans I am happy as the price is competitive. I have essentially been bumped to the BB 120 speed profile, and I consistently top out around 125 Mbps down on speed tests. The new 120 profile says up to 10 Mbps upload, but I am still receiving the original upload speeds of 5-6ish. Is this a modem thing, a speed profile thing or something else? As silly as this sounds I'd really like to be in that 10+ (over provisioned) range. I am running a bunch of server stuff for none-commercial usage, like plex and a few other things so that I can access my files from the "cloud" without paying sky-high prices. Puns! Anyway, do the Shaw gurus that lurk around here have something to say about the matter? I'd really appreciate that. (o:'

Question about how Shaw internet travels to my house

$

I live in a old (1950's) neighborhood in Edmonton and to my knowledge all I have for comms is a couple of twisted copper pairs running from a telephone pole in the back ally. They currently provide me with 50mbps DSL through telus. I do not have any fiber lines run yet. Shaw says I'm eligible for 150mbps down and I'm just wondering what they would actually use to provide that service. Do they use the copper?

So I live in a townhouse ( 1997 built in Surrey, BC ) where I already have Sat connected, the installer had connected it to the cable box outside and each room get their respective signal form the wall outlet Currently, I have telus and since shaw connects via Coax - does that mean the sat connection has to come off? or they use a signal splitter/diplexer even if that then how would the room get connection

[AB] New internet 150 Hitron modem is disaster

Alright with the new shaw promotion I changed to internet 150 they had to take away my dpc3825 (in bridge mode) and swapped to hitron one. I also requested it to be bridged so the hitron itself only works as modem right now. the technician just swapped the modem so I have the same setup as previous. as shown on the picture the ping spikes to 1000ms and it happens regularly. I talked to 4 of technical support on shaw and some of them were just ignorant saying it looks good enough and should not effect my internet experience since the internet speed is fine ... haha well I got technician coming on this friday and have to wait for a week with this garbage modem :/ I tried to connect directly from the modem to computer.. ( tried 11 computers!) and tried to remove a coax splitters between incoming coax and the modem just in case but made no difference. So I realized that the new modem itself is the problem. Guys.. Hitron SUCKS! if you are using cisco dpc3825 just keep with it and go for telus if you value ping. (shaw's ping and jitter are unreliable) I got trapped to 2 year contract with shaw and wait for a week to get technician to figure out wheter the hitron is defective or not. ps. from playing overwatch i can clearly see that something is wrong before I get in to the shaw server. this was not like this when using dpc3825 with internet100

[AB] Shaw business 1 yr deal over, what to do now?

Hi, so last year I got business internet 30, office tv and office phone all for 109 dollars a month. Now this deal runs out in July so I either have to pay 90 dollars more that's the normal price or switch to something else. I see that home services have free range tv app and some other things too. I have a home server windows server 2012 essentials that I use some static ips with the business account and home internet don't have statics so it would be back to dynamic ips which are okay I guess. Its only a month away and I guess I could suck it up and pay the extra 90 a month but I really want another good deal to go through for me.

Shaw Cabel Tricking Seniors into contracts

Shaw cable has recently tricked my father who is over 70 into a contract over some HD tv boxes. My dad made the switch to telus and saving 160$ per month. Now they send him a bill wanted him to pay the HD box, but they don't want to give him the HD box, and have taking him to collections. My dad has been a shaw customer for over 35 years, and shaw has never had contracts in that time. I'm going to switch to telus after all this... This is some pretty shady business practices.

At the moment have Telus Optik 50/10. Shaw has a deal on for 150/15, was wondering if it is worth it, how is Shaw service compared to Telus? I am in Vancouver and I like to game Xbox live. I had Shaw 5 years ago and I remember when downloading files we could never get decent speeds, has it improved?

Not getting optimal speeds using Aris modem SBG 6782 and 2.4 Ghz

I just ran some tests. Not sure if things have changed or I haven't noticed this before. Fortunately, 5.0 Ghz works fine. I can get very close to advertised speeds on my wifi devices but not with 2.4 Ghz. But because of the distance issues with 5.0 Ghz range my devices typically use 2.4. Has anyone noticed this with this Aris modem?
